Hope For The Holidays

In 2012 Hope of the Holidays started with 900 bags and the idea that it would be nice for kids to have a hands on experience of feeling good by doing good for others. Most of our children have taken a can to school for a collection but most haven’t had the opportunity to do more. We are so grateful that with the support of our sponsors, the volunteers, and the money raised from the Furyk & Friends event, we have been able to grow Hope for the Holidays and feed children who otherwise might not have had a meal over the holiday break.

Along with over 200 families, in 2015 we were able to pack 3,000 bags with a holiday meal for children in the Blessings in a Backpack Program on the First Coast. This annual event is not possible without the help our sponsors PepsiCo, Interline, AT&T, Web.com, Furyk & Friends Event Sponsors and our local area grocery stores such as Publix, Trader Joe’s and Native Sun. It takes less than 60 minutes for all of the bags to be filled. Once the bags were packed, trucks, cars and SUVS from the Duval and St. Johns county schools were filled. The bags are ready to be delivered to all of the schools to be sent home with the kids.

Blessings in a Backpack is a 501 C(3) non-profit organization currently feeding nearly 66,000 children in 583 schools in 45 states in America. Blessings in a Backpack provides elementary school children who are on the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program with food to take home for 38 weekends during the school year. The program is run strictly by donations from individuals and corporations. We are committed to feeding the future of America, one school at a time.

2015 Hope for the Holidays

Over 200 families joined the Jim & Tabitha Furyk Foundation in Ponte Vedra Beach on Thursday, December 10th to pack 3000 bags with a holiday meal for children in the Blessings in a Backpack program on the First Coast.

“This is so much fun!” exclaimed one child as he picked up a red reusable grocery bag to fill with good food for the holidays.

The Jim and Tabitha Furyk Foundation, along with donations from PepsiCo, ConAgra, Trader Joe’s, Native Sun, Publix, Valley Ridge Academy, and One Ocean, was able to provide over 10 shelf stable items for each bag. Additional funding was provided by sponsors such as Interline, AT&T, and web.com among others. Starting at 8am, volunteers were at the Mickler Landing parking lot unloading boxes of hot cocoa, Life Cereal, Rice-a-Roni bowls, canned hams, stuffing and more. Four long rows of tables were stacked high with food ready for distribution. In the early evening, a new shift of volunteers (and some from the morning) stood behind the tables to help hand out items and restock.

“I had no idea what to expect,” said volunteer Jennifer Blin after the rush was over. “This was awesome!”

It took less then 60 minutes for all the bags to be filled. Once the bags were packed, trucks, cars and SUVS from the Duval and St. Johns county schools were filled. In addition to packing bags, all were welcome to hot chocolate, candy canes and Starbucks donated coffee under a tent of holiday lights.

“This began four years ago.” said Tabitha Furyk, “with 900 bags and the idea that it would be nice for kids to have a hands on experience of feeling good by doing good for others. Most of our children have taken a can to school for a collection but most haven’t had the opportunity to do more. We are so grateful that with the support of our sponsors, the volunteers, and the money raised from the Furyk & Friends event, we have been able to grow Hope for the Holidays and feed children who otherwise might not have had a meal over the holiday break.”

As the mist came rolling in and the trucks rolled out, children young and old could be heard remarking what a wonderful night, what a wonderful cause and what fun.
